Calclab in the Open Access Labs

How to use Calclab: Xprint and WinSCP.

Introduction

The Computing and Information Services (CIS) Open Access Labs (OAL) and Math Calclab are run from different servers, which are administered by different departments. Therefore, the login ID and password required for accessing these two systems will most likely differ. Use your Calclab username to log in to Calclab, but when asked for a user ID to print, enter your NetID and password.

Accessing Math Calclab Using X-Win32

From a computer in the OAL, select Start > Programs > Communications > X-Win32. When X-Win32 has opened, right-click the X-Win32 button on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. When the menu has opened, select Sessions > CalclabX, where X is one of the Calclabs available (see Figure 1). Enter your Calclab user name and password.

Maple

The OAL computer software include Maple 6 and Maple V Release 5.1, and may be used without accessing Calclab. In this case, you will be able to use Maple, but will only have access to files on the Calclab servers through FTP. To open Maple, select Start > Programs > Applications > Maple 6 (or Maple V Release 5.1). Once Maple has opened, any local Maple files can be accessed.

WinSCP

Select Start > Programs > Communications > WinSCP to start WinSCP. When SCP first starts, a Login dialog box appears. It contains a Session window, where you enter required information such as the Host name and Calclab account information.

Session Properties

The first line in the Session window asks for a Host name, which is Calclab1.math.tamu.edu. The port number should automatically be set to 22. Enter your Calclab User name and Password, and click Login (see Figure 2).

WinSCP Operation

The WinSCP navigation window is divided into two frames (see Figure 3). The left frame contains files and folders on the local machine, and the right frame displays the remote machine (the server that you just accessed). Both frames can be navigated the same way as in Windows Explorer. Files and folders can be dragged and dropped between frames with the mouse. They can be copied, pasted, deleted, and moved by right-clicking with the mouse and selecting the desired option. New directories can be created via this method as well. In addition, files and folders can be dragged and dropped to and from the desktop to locations in either frame of the WinSCP window.

Printing From Calclab Using Xprint

  1. From an active Calclab session, open the desired Maple worksheet.
  2. Select File > Print, make sure Output to File is selected (the diamond is depressed, see Figure 4), and then press Print at the bottom of the window. This saves the worksheet as a postscript file with the name yourfilename.ps. For example, if the original file is named Lab1.mws, this command creates a file named Lab1.ps.

Figure 4. Make sure Output to File is selected

  4. Open an X-terminal window by clicking the button in the lower right of the Calclab desktop (see Figure 5). The Terminal button has a computer monitor on it and clicking it opens a window containing a Calclab prompt.

    Figure 5. Terminal button

  6. The general Xprint usage is as follows (spaces included):
  7. xprint –d <labname> <filename.ps>

Where <labname> is the name of the lab[1] to forward the document and <filename.ps> is the name of the document to be printed in postscript. For example, if a Maple worksheet named Lab1 is to be printed in the Blocker Open Access Lab, the command would be exactly:

    xprint –d blocker Lab1.ps

NOTE: The .ps extension is a very important part of this command line. Xprint requires a postscript file. An inappropriate file type results in garbage. This is considered a user’s mistake and will still be charged to your account.

  8. Xprint now asks for your CIS NetID and password for identification and charging purposes.  The Math department does not issue these NetIDs and passwords.
  9. When completed successfully, Xprint displays a message stating that the document is being forwarded to the peer server. The document will be placed in the OAL print area under your CIS NetID. If any other message is displayed, please record the message, then contact an OAL staff member for additional help. More help can also be found by reading the Xprint manual pages on either UNIX or in Calclab. See the Introduction to Unix handout on how to do this.
