Nikon SUPER COOLSCAN 5000

How to use the Nikon SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 to scan film negatives and slides.

Introduction

The Nikon SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 is located on a single machine in the Student Computing Center on the first floor across from the Resource Desk.

This tutorial walks you through a few basic steps to scan your negatives:

  • How to insert your negative strip
  • Several ways to preview your images and decide which one you want to scan
  • How to scan and save your image

How to Insert Your Negative Strip

Hold negatives where the number of the picture can be read.  Insert negatives where lowest number goes in first (the head of people on pictures will be nearest you). Insert negatives AFTER the green light on Nikon scanner stops blinking.  Push in as far as the negatives can go.  The scanner should then automatically grab negatives.

Start Menu > Applications > Graphics > Adobe Photoshop CS4
To open Adobe Photoshop, go to the Start Menu and click on the All Programs link at the bottom; follow through to the Applications folder and then once inside click the Graphics folder and find Adobe Photoshop CS4. Select to open.

Adobe Photoshop > File  >  Import  > Nikon Scan 4.0 (Figure 1, below)
Once inside Adobe Photoshop, click the File Menu in the top left-hand corner; follow this menu to the Import submenu and find the Nikon Scan 4.0 button and click to initiate the scanner.

How to Preview Your Images

Move the cursor as shown in Figure 2 below, and a pane pops out for selection.

Click on the pane that pops out.  From here, if you know exactly where the picture you want to scan is located on the strip, choose its number (1, 2, 3, or 4), and click the Preview button at the bottom left of the pop-out panel (shown in Figure 3). However, if you are not sure exactly where your picture is located, skip this step and continue after Figure 3.

If you are not sure where your picture is on your strip, click the button near the left of the pop-out panel (see Figure 4) that allows you to preview a thumbnail of each picture.

The screen should then resemble Figure 5, below. You can then scroll through each thumbnail and choose the one you want. When you have decided which image you want to view as a larger image, double-click its thumbnail.

How to Scan and Save Your Image

Once in preview mode, you have the option to manipulate the different colors and properties of the image. When you are satisfied, click on the top left of the picture and drag a box to the bottom right to crop the entire image, or whatever section of the image you are interested in scanning. Click Scan.  Click Yes to the warning shown in Figure 6.
